Top Ten Tuesday: Books with the Word HOUSE in the Title

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish and now hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl. For the rules see her blog.

The topic this week is Books with the Word “[Insert Word Here]” in the Title. I decided to choose books with the word HOUSE in the title. These ten books are all books I’ve read.

The House at Sea’s End by Elly Griffiths – a Ruth Galloway mystery.

The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson – more of a psychological study than a horror story.

The Power-House by John Buchan – a thriller, the first of five featuring the barrister and Tory MP Edward Leithen.

The Giant’s House by Elizabeth McCracken – a love story.

Slade House by David Mitchell – a mixture of a ghost story, science fiction and horror.

A House Divided by Margaret Skea – historical fiction set in 15th century Scotland.

The House of Silk by Anthony Horowitz – a Sherlock Holmes novel.

The House of Stairs by Barbara Vine – a psychological thriller.

Peril at End House by Agatha Christie – a Poirot mystery.

The House at Riverton by Kate Morton – historical fiction.

Have you read any of them?

  1. You’ve got some great choices here, Virginia! Jackson, Christie, Griffiths, Horowitz.. they’re all authors whose work I like a lot, so it’s good to see them here. These top-ten Tuesdays are inventive!

  2. Now that I know how to search Goodreads for the books I’ve read with words in them, I need to check how many I’ve read with HOUSE in the title. It’s 20! (Since I started using Goodreads.)

      1. Do you have a goodreads account where you keep track of what you’ve read? If so, go to your list of READ books in MY BOOKS. On that page you will see two search bars. The bigger of the two says: “Search Books”. The smaller of the boxes says “Search and Add Books”. In that smaller box, type in a word like WORLD and hit return. Only the books you’ve added to your reading list or the list of books you want to read will be searched. When I figured out how to do it, I had so much fun deciding which word to pick. Then I would check my list for other people’s words, too.

    1. I haven’t read the books you mention, I’ll look out for them. Sun is a good choice – I’ll visit to see which books you chose.

  3. Oh, yes! Nice choice of word. I’ve read several of these – The House at Riverton, Peril at End House, The Haunting of Hill House, and The House at Sea’s End. I might have read The House of Silk – can’t quite remember for sure.

    1. Thanks, Kay. I also have difficulty sometimes being unsure whether I’ve read a specific book – which is one reason I began this blog to record what I’ve read. It helps. :)

    1. Agatha Christie is one of my favourite authors! I’ll look at your list – I can’t think of any books off the top of my head that contain the word triangle!

    1. I’ve read a few of Kate Morton’s books and found I like some more than others. I did enjoy The House at Riverton but I thought it reminded me a bit of Du Maurier’s Rebecca. I then read The Forgotten Garden and realised that I was reading a re-working of The Secret Garden, which disappointed me – a bit of a cheat really. And I think the others I’ve read weren’t as good as The House at Riverton.

So if you’ve decided she is not for you I think you’re right :)
