Every Friday Book Beginnings on Friday is hosted by Gillion at Rose City Reader where you can share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires.
Yesterday’s Papers by Martin Edwards is one of my TBRs.
I killed her many years ago.
I like the cover of my paperback, published by Arcturus Crime Classics.
Also every Friday there is The Friday 56, hosted by Freda at Freda’s Voice.
These are the rules:
- Grab a book, any book.
- Turn to page 56, or 56% on your eReader. If you have to improvise, that is okay.
- Find any sentence (or a few, just don’t spoil it) that grabs you.
- Post it.
- Add the URL to your post in the link on Freda’s most recent Friday 56 post.

Jeannie dubbed the case Watergate: the papers loved it and made the tag their own. She had once been a disco queen and when she organised a Jive for Justice at Empire Hall, it sold out and made national headlines. A tabloid paper bought exclusive rights to her story and portrayed her as a modern Joan of Arc.

On Leap Year Day in 1964, an attractive teenager called Carole Jeffries was strangled in a Liverpool park. The killing caused a sensation: Carole came from a prominent political family and her pop musician boyfriend was a leading exponent of the Mersey Sound. When a neighbour confessed to the crime, the case was closed. Now, more than thirty years later, Ernest Miller, an amateur criminologist, seeks to persuade lawyer Harry Devlin that the true culprit escaped scot free. Although he suspects Miller’s motives, Harry has a thirst for justice and begins to delve into the past. But when another death occurs, it becomes clear that someone wants old secrets to remain buried – at any price…

This is the fourth Harry Devlin book, although I haven’t read any of the earlier books, so plenty to look forward to. I’ve read all of Martin Edwards’ Lake District books and loved them.
This one sounds like a good series to begin reading. Great premise and excerpts. Thanks for sharing, and here’s mine: “CRIME SCENE”

I hope you’ll enjoy this, Margaret. I really like the Lake District novels; and, although I haven’t read all of the Harry Devlins, I like the ones I’ve read. Edwards is a skilled writer as well as as skilled editor.

Like you, I haven’t read any of the Harry Devlin books, somehow they’ve never taken my fancy, so I’m going to be very interested to see how you get on with this one. Maybe you’ll encourage me to take the plunge.

I haven’t come across them before. I found this one at Barter Books a few years ago.

This sounds good. I haven’t read any by this author, but I’ll look for them. I’m also reading a mystery re-investigating a 30-year old murder. It’s called The Life We Bury by Allen Eskins.

I think the opening line is a good start too – who was killed and who was the killer?

I didn’t realise Martin Edwards was that far into a new series, I will have to investigate as I loved his Lake District books.

Sorry Cath, I should have said the Harry Devin books are an earlier series, first one was published in 1991. There are 8 books in the series now.

I haven’t read this author before, I’m afraid, but I’m always up for a good mystery. From that opening, I am wondering who he killed and why. I hope you enjoy this one! Have a great week.
