Chunksters

I’ve got a lot of long books over 500 pages long and I keep putting off reading them because of their length, but they do take up a lot of space on the bookshelves. The ones shown above are just some of them and I’m hoping to start reading at least a few of them in the months to come.

Maybe I’ll start with one of the two books by Ken Follett:

Fall of Giants is the first book in his Century Trilogy, following five families through the world-shaking dramas of the First World War, the Russian Revolution, and the struggle for votes for women.

Or

World Without End, the second Kingsbridge book, set two centuries after the townspeople finished building the Gothic cathedral that was at the heart of The Pillars of the Earth (my review).

Or it could be one of the others, as my fancy takes me.

If you’ve read any of these books I’d love to know what you think about them.

The one at the bottom of the middle pile is Of Human Bondage by W Somerset Maugham.

  1. I know what you mean about chunksters, Margaret. I put off reading them, too sometimes. I have to admit, I walk by them at the library, too, especially if it’s ONE OF THOSE WEEKS. I ought to take the plunge more often, I suppose.

  2. I love a good chunky book but have to be in the right mood. I’ve tried Ken Follett but his writing doesn’t grab me. I loved all of the Harrod Eagles Morland books though

  3. I enjoyed World Without End, although I found the plot very similar to The Pillars of the Earth. I have another Kingsbridge book, The Evening and the Morning, on my TBR but have also been putting it off because of the length!

  4. Of Human Bondage is absolutely brilliant, Ulysses is just the greatest and I laughed so much at Past Imperfect that my husband had to read it after me and laughed his way through it as well. They do take up a lot of room you’re right!

  5. I have a similar situation with the big fat novels on my shelves. They just look so daunting! I’m going to do a 700+ page one for Classics Club in the next month – fortunately I’m told that it’s a page turner.

Years have gone by since I read any Ken Follett but he can certainly write a good yarn. Since you enjoyed Pillars of the Earth that sounds like a good place to begin
