Saturday Snapshot

We’ve had mixed weather this week, with days of torrential rain and a few sunny, although not hot, days. One sunny evening we were eating dinner and looking out onto the back garden and to our surprise saw this hedgehog marching purposely across the grass.

It was making for the bridge over the little stream in our garden. I wish I’d videoed it to capture the way it walked.
When it got to the bridge I could see its legs more clearly – such long legs, I thought. I found this fact on the Hedgehog Preservation Society fact sheet: ‘They have relatively long legs – about 10cms (4″) – and these enable them to run as fast as we can walk.’

Hedgehogs do carry fleas, but I read on The Mammal Society website that they have only one specific type and they don’t carry the type that bite cats and humans, which is good because we’ve just got rid of Heidi’s fleas – that also liked to bite me!

  1. Margaret, those pictures are fabulous, and I didn’t know they had long legs, or that the fleas only live on hedgehogs – for some reason I always assumed they passed them on! My Snapshot is here, and I’m still stuck in the past… http://goo.gl/ou72V

  2. We read Elegance of the Hedgehog this year. Many of us had a “vague” idea what a hedgehog looked like! I guess their American cousins are groundhogs.

  3. I’ve never seen a real hedgehog before so your photos and info are good education for me. They remind me of the book The Elegance of the Hedgehog. I’m just curious as to where their home environs are because here in Alberta, I’ve never heard of hedgehog sightings. 😉

  4. What an adorable little guy. And how nice he stopped for a visit. We don’t have them here in the US so I’ve never actually seen one in person. They kind of resemble a our groundhogs which occasionally stop by and chew up my veggie garden.

  5. That is so cute! I’m betting we don’t have them in the wild around here in Oregon, but I really have no idea. 🙂

  6. A Hedgehog! How very British! I was born in England and we lived there for awhile when I was little. This picture is bringing back some long forgotten memory of a hedgehog in our garden…or perhaps that was just a story my mother read me. LOVELY pictures.

  7. I’ve never seen a hedgehog either. How wonderful to have one trot across your lawn. We have echnidas in Australia. They have a wonderful rolling kind of walk.
