Visual – Booking Through Thursday on Friday

So ‘¦ the books that you own (however many there may be) ‘¦ do you display them proudly right there in plain sight for all the world to see? (At least the world that comes into your living room.)

Or do you keep them tucked away in your office or bedroom or library or closet or someplace less ‘œpublic?’

This is a very easy question to answer:

My books are on display as you come into the house – in the hall and living room as well as in the study and all the bedrooms. I have a few cookery books in the kitchen too. Actually I have too many books to hide them away anywhere and I have no wish to do so. As Cicero wrote:

A room without books is like a body without a soul.

and Anthony Powell:

Books do furnish a room.

  1. My house used to be like that but now I keep them all confined in the study. I couldn’t cope with the noise of all those words around me all the time. I bring down the book I’m reading and I find I’m much more likely to finish it before picking up something else when there is no real temptation to be seen.

  2. Like you Margaret, I am surrounded by books. To add to the two quotes is the one that I found at Bookgirl’s Nightstand blog by Heinrich Mann: “A room without books is a room without windows.” I love that one.

  3. I’m with you Margaret – our books are everywhere. I love going to someone’s house and seeing their books, I have to go look at them! I find it fascinating to see what other people read.

  4. Annie, I would love to have a big enough room to shelve all our books – a library would be marvellous. As it is books have to share space with everything else and actually I like seeing what I’ve read and what’s still to read all around me.

Roxane, that is a profound quotation – books are windows on the world!

Barbara, I love seeing what other people have on their bookshelves, too! I also want to know what people are reading in the coffee shops etc – yesterday I was in Cafe Nero where a girl was reading and busily underlining and making notes as she read – what was it??

  5. I never quite feel comfortable in a person’s house if there are no books. I watch decorating programs on TV sometimes and they never put books on bookshelves, in fact they usually demolish the shelves! I am horrified by that. My books are mostly in my study but some of the bigger and prettier ones are in the living room.

  6. Hi Margaret,

Like yourself, we just have too many books to keep them all hidden away, besides which, I love to walk into a room with books on display, it’s oddly comforting.

We have purpose built, floor to ceiling bookshelves, filling an alcove in our lounge, where the ‘better quality’ books live.

Every available space in the office, study and bedroom, is also full to bursting with reading material, be it my fiction, or hubbie’s academic books.

Love your two quotes, both oh! so true
