A Second First Time? – Booking Through Thursday

What book would you love to be able to read again for the first time?

This is like asking what is your favourite book – I can’t decide! There are many books I’ve read that I wish I could read again as though it were the first time, just as there are many books that improve on second readings.

Off the top of my head here are a few I wish I read for the first time again (ask me again tomorrow and I’d probably tell you different books). These are all books that took my breath away the first time round:

  1. Oh, I loved Atonement! The movie is equally great too IMHO.
I look forward to reading Beloved as I heard nothing but raves about this book.

  2. This was harder than I thought it would be! I agree over Beloved, although it slipped my mind when I was writing mine. In fact anything by Toni Morrisson could go on. And I still have to read Half of a Yellow Sun so it looks like that could be a good first time for me!

  3. I’m not a big Toni Morrison fan, but some of those other titles are intriguing. So many new titles to harvest from other people’s posts…

  4. I have read 2 of the books you mentioned.. Atonement and Beloved.. I would not say I would consider rereading them though.. interesting list you got there 🙂

  5. Piece of Cake by Derek Robinson. I first read it in 1989, then again recently and was happy to discover it thrilled me just as much the second time as the first. I was worried that my reading tastes had changed and I wouldn’t love it as much as I did the first time, but I did. Perhaps, even more. The author’s World War One trilogy would also be on this list.

  6. I would love to be able to read Pride and Prejudice again for the first time. Even though after many re-reads I love it more and more, that first time was just so delightful. Same with Jane Eyre.

  7. Wow what a list! I wish I had time to read that much. My list of books I want to read is so long! I guess it will have to wait until four children leave home! Check out my Booking through Thursday here.

  8. Atonement would be great to read again as if for the first time. And from the Toni Morrison works, I think I might pick Song of Solomon for myself.

  9. Atonement – I definitely agree! I’ve also only just finished The Other Hand by Chris Cleave and I’d love to read it again for the first time. I heartily recommend it. Visit my blog to see why. Happy reading!
