It’s time for another Classics Club Spin.
Before next Sunday, 20 October 2024 create a post that lists twenty books of your choice that remain “to be read” on your Classics Club list. On that day the Classics Club will post a number from 1 through 20. The challenge is to read whatever book falls under that number on your Spin List by the 18th December, 2024.
Here’s my list:
- In Cold Blood by Truman Capote
- The Case of the Gilded Fly by Edmund Crispin
- The Stars Look Down by A J Cronin
- Bleak House by Charles Dickens
- Dombey and Son by Charles Dickens
- Nicholas Nickleby by Charles Dickens
- The Lost World by Arthur Conan Doyle
- Friends and Heroes by Olivia Manning
- The Birds and other short stories by Daphne du Maurier
- I’ll Never be Young Again by Daphne du Maurier
- North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell
- Brighton Rock by Graham Greene
- The Go Between by L P Hartley
- The Great Fire by Shirley Hazzard
- Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
- Daisy Miller by Henry James
- Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee
- Friends and Heroes by Olivia Manning
- Down and Out in Paris and London by George Orwell
- Fire from Heaven by Mary Renault
I hope it’s one of the shorter books! Which one/s would you recommend?
I always enjoy your CCS list, Margaret. You’ve got such varied choices. There are several there that I’ve not read, so I’ll be specially interested to know which one you get!

Ooh, lots of great books there! Nicholas Nickleby and Bleak House, of course, but neither of them could count as short! The Go-Between is shorter and brilliant, so that would be my pick. – that, or Brighton Rock. But The Lost World is good fun, and I loved The Birds collection. Good luck!

Here’s hoping you get North and South or the Great Fire!

I’ve read Brave New World and Go Set a Watchman, so if you get either of those, I think you’ll enjoy either of them. Well… you can’t really enjoy Brave New World, but it is well written! I have Daisy Miller on my list as well, so best of luck to us both!

We both have Bleak House on our list, but I’m not sure I want something that long (and “hard”) this time of the year. I hope you get The Birds. That’s a fun collection of her stories and would be good to read near Halloween!

I wish you #19.

Brighton Rock and The Go-Between are 2 of my most favourite books ever, but then I do like the idea of a Daphne duMaurier!

The George Orwell is really interesting, if a bit depressing.

Glad to see an Orwell on your list, but a good read should be coming your way whichever way the cc gods spin this time.

I’d recommend Dombey and Son and also North and South. Not short books unfortunately but well worth the investment of your time

Oh, The Lost World is such a fun adventure novel! I would like to re-read that one day. I love North and South and Bleak House. The Birds and Other Short Stories by Daphne du Maurier has been on my personal reading list for a while now.
