Happy Birthday BooksPlease!

BooksPlease is 4 years old today!

I find it hard to believe that I’ve been writing this blog for 4 years. It seems like it was only yesterday I tentatively clicked on ‘publish’  for the first time.

Over these last 4 years I’ve read almost 400 books and have written about the  majority of them. I’ve also written about places I love to visit but my blog has stayed mainly about books.

The greatest change in my reading has come about gradually over the last two years or so, in that I now read a lot more crime fiction than I ever did before and that’s down to other bloggers, but also because I find crime fiction books are about so much more than crime. There is such variety in crime fiction – dealing with contemporary issues, historical crime (true and fictional), moral and ethical issues, personal and psychological crimes, and organised crime and so on. There are police procedurals, private detectives, amateur sleuths, serial killers and racial and political crime thrillers. And I love variety in my reading.

Books Please Me

I’ve also found that blogging isn’t a solitary pursuit, although it can be if you want. I’ve ‘met’ so many kindred spirits on book blogs and other blogs too. There are numerous reading challenges and memes to join and the opportunity to discuss books with people world wide. I’m very happy that I ventured into the book blogosphere. Thanks to everyone who reads my blog and especially to those who’ve taken the time and effort to make comments.

  1. Margaret – Happy blog birthday!! Thanks for your thoughtful, interesting and entertaining thoughts and reviews. Little wonder your blog is one of my “must visits!’ May it have many more birthdays.

  2. Margaret, I can’t believe it’s been 4 years! Actually, you must have started just a couple of weeks before I did because my 4-year mark is coming up at the end of this month. Of course, I’ve been in and out and in and out. LOL

I understand what you say about crime fiction. I always feel sad when people discount what they would call “genre” fiction as lesser novels somehow. Many of the best books I read fall into some kind of “genre” fiction.

I enjoy every post you write. Here’s to many, many more!

  3. My experience with crime fiction has been more or less the same as yours. In fact I used to have a quiet laugh at those hooked on crime yarns. Not any more. Happy 4th. birthday, Margaret!

  4. That’s why I love to read and write crime fiction. Two of my own novels, “Horns of a Dilemma” and “A Terrible Enemy” deal with endangered animal species. I don’t go into horrific details about these two animals, but I do tell the readers enough to let them know that both species are on the endangered species list and that in approximately 12 years, if nothing changes for the better, tigers will become extinct. I also try to awaken readers’ minds to other dilemmas through my characters’ personal and police lives. I hope I do that, even in a small way. Crime fiction isn’t so much about killers and victims as it is about the repercussions of the act and how it affects everyone, however slightly involved. It’s about human relationships and our emotions. That’s why I write mysteries. Jo

  5. Happy 4th! I read more crime fiction than anything else too and I agree that it’s about so much more than just crime. As for blogging, I’ve been at it less than 2 years and the best part for me, aside from almost daily writing, has been the virtual friends I’ve made from various parts of the world. I’m rather isolated at home in the country but now I feel surrounded by friends.
