This week’s musing is:
What’s your favorite ‘cozy’ book €” and, by that, I’m meaning ‘curl-up-on-a-cold-day comfort read‘? Or, if you don’t have a particular book, what genre do you most feel like reading when the weather starts to turn colder?
For me it’s a ‘curl-up-on-a-rainy-day’ rather than a cold day. As a child on rainy days I used to love sitting inside watching the raindrops running down the window, curled up in front of an open fire with a book to read. Usually it was an Enid Blyton book – Mallory Towers for example, or one of the Heidi books, or What Katy Did. Over the years I read these many times.
These days, on rainy days I like to read a book such as One Fine Day by Mollie Panter-Downes, a nostalgic look at England just after the Second World War. Anything that transports me to another world is good. It may be a book I’ve read and enjoyed before such as Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes, which would whisk me off to sunny Italy. It’s nothing like the film they made of it – the book is much better. Or it could be historical fiction such as this one I’ve been looking forward to reading for ages, Helen of Troy by Margaret George.

I have never read Under the Tuscan Sun. I did watch the movie on TV once, and did not enjoy it, so I’m glad to hear the book was better than the movie. Most books are better than the movies, that’s why I always try to read the book before I watch the movies.

Margaret – I like your “curl-up” choices. I’m right with you when it comes to historical fiction, too. I really enjoy “losing myself” in a good historical novel :-).

Oooh I agree. When the rain falls so fast it’s hissing through the air – it’s indescribably wonderful to be curled up with a book. I really don’t mind what book!

I like the ones you mentioned. When you talked about reading Heidi, I was transported in my memories to those days.
That’s one of the treasures of reading…memories of where we were in our lives when we read the books.

I haven’t read Under the Tuscan Sun, but I did watch the movie. I wasn’t all that thrilled with it, but I’m glad the book was better than the movie!

On a cold, rainy day the best cozies are food related–Diane Mott Davison, maybe. Especially if some kind of stew or sauce is simmering on the stove!

I love a real page-turner on chilly days, like yesterday when it was a little raw outside and raining and I was finishing The Network by Jason Elliot. This is a thriller set in England, Sudan, and Afghanistan that had been totally involved.

The Little White Horse, The Children of Green Knowe and What Katy Did were all rainy day favourites when I was a child but I thoroughly agree with One Fine Day which rocketed to the top of my favourite books list after I read it last year.
I also love Under The Tuscan Sun, although it did make me almost sick with jealousy! I quite like the film too although it bears no resemblence to the book as you said.
I think my favourite foreigner-in-Italy film is My House In Umbria with the wonderful Maggie Smith and Timothy Spall!
