Time is of the Essence – Booking Through Thursday

1. Do you get to read as much as you WANT to read?

(I’™m guessing #1 is an easy question for everyone?)

2. If you had (magically) more time to read’“what would you read? Something educational? Classic? Comfort Reading? Escapism? Magazines?

Of course in theory I have more time to read than ever before, but in practice the time I spend reading now that I’m at home is almost the same as when I went out to work full-time.  There are never enough hours in the day to do all the other things I want to do either.

If I did magically have more time to read I wouldn’t read magazines. Why buy a magazine when you could buy a book for around the same price? And they’re full of adverts – I don’t watch adverts on TV so I’m not going to buy a magazine full of them.

No, I would read the books in my to-be-read piles, books from my wishlist, books from the library – a glorious mixture of books, including classics, contemporary novels, escapism, detective/crime fiction, historical novels, non-fiction – history, philosophy, religion, biography, memoirs, autobiographies, diaries and letters, travel and whatever takes my fancy. If only …

  1. Like you, I want to read books from my TBR pile.
I do love reading magazines but I find they’re putting too many ads in it so I’ve cut down on buying them.

  2. Even when I am on vacation I still don’t have enough time to read, so I can definitely agree with you that other things step in and get in the way. No matter what the circumstances I find that I would always like to do more reading.

  3. How I wish I could get more read! But there it is. Btw, I see you are reading the biography of Mary Wesley. I have so very nearly started that several times over the past fortnight. The preface bit was very enticing, but other books pushed ahead. I do hope you’re enjoying it.

  4. I know what you mean about not having the time you want to do all the things you want to do. Every time I have a holiday or a vacation, I plan all of these books that I’m going to read, but I never get them all read. Life just seems to get in the way, and I have so many other interests that take up my time, as well. Wouldn’t it be great if you could magically find more time in the day?

  5. Every few years I will subscribe to the National Geographic or Smithsonian for a while and save up issues. I like to have them handy for when I get the urge to take a bath. It seems like such a waste of time not to be able to read while bathing, so I take the magazines in with me. I don’t worry about them getting damaged as much, and then I get to read something short and intellectually satisfying at the same time.

  6. I would never pick up magazines, either. I used to tear all the cardstock-type ones out of magazines before reading them; now I just don’t get magazines anymore.

  7. I used to read certain magazines that focused on a few interests of mine, but when I noticed that the magazines had started piling up, I stopped buying (and reading) them. Like you, I’d rather spend the time with books!

  8. Magazines drive me crazy with all the little cards inside and having to spend the time tearing out everything. I’d rather read a book as well. I make exceptions for writer’s digest magazine and Edutopia. Two of my favorites. My post is up now.

  9. You know, I actually have a limit to how much I can read — I start to feel like I’ve taken too much in after a while, and need some time to process. So while I would like to have more time, I can see myself with TOO much as well — I mean, it’s possible.

  10. I would LOVE more time to read. I seem to find more and more ways to fill my time at the moment, and the amount of time I can find to read tends to suffer. But, of course, I’ll skip an hour or two fo sleep if the book is worth it, just so I can fit in it each day!

If I had all the time in the world, my reading patterns wouldn’t change (choices based on my own TBR pile, reviews and blog recommendations), I’d just get through more books quicker!
