These are just a few of my to-be-read books. They are all books I own and have not read – some of them have been on my bookshelves for years. So as a challenge for myself I am aiming to read them before the end of next year. For variety I’ve chosen a mixture of fiction and non-fiction.
Fiction
- Lady Susan/The Watsons/Sanditon by Jane Austen (her last and unfinished novel and two fragments)
- Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
- The Ghost Road by Pat Barker
- People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks
- The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas
- Friends and Heroes by Olivia Manning (the last book in The Balkan Trilogy)
- East Lynne by Mrs Henry Wood
Non-fiction
- Band of Brothers by Stephen Ambrose
- Russia: A Journey to the Heart of a Land and Its People by Jonathan Dimbleby
- Big Chief Elizabeth: How England’s Adventurers Gambled and Won the New World by Giles Milton
- 1599: A Year In the Life of William Shakespeare by James Shapiro
- Thomas Hardy: the Time-torn Man by Claire Tomalin
- Great Escape Stories by Eric Williams
- After the Victorians by A N Wilson

I’m definitely hoping to read a lot of books currently on my shelves next year — I should make a similar list. Your list looks good!

Already a list for next year’s reading? Mine is still only a vague notion. Some very good books to look forward to!

I loved The Count of Monte Cristo!! I was thinking about rereading it, but it is a long one. Maybe something else by Dumas? I’d also like to read East Lynne and Pat Barker, too.
