The challenge is to read 3 to 6 books between February 1, 2008 and July 14, 2008, choosing from books and authors that you discovered, loved, or adored as a child. Anything and everything that you read through the age of 18 would qualify.
The books I will be choosing from are:
- Mr Blossom’s Shop by Barbara Euphan Todd.
- Heidi by Joanna Spyri
- The Secret Garden by Francis Hodgson Burnett
- What Katy Did by Susan Coolidge
- The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Orczy
- The Gloriet Tower by Eileen Meyler

These were all favourites. I may have to add Heidi Grows Up and Heidi’s Children and also What Katy Did Next.
I haven’t read any of those either. I tried The Secret Garden but never got into it.

That’s a nice list. Two of them I’ve not heard of, so look forward to your thoughts on those in good time. I remember very well falling for the Scarlet Pimpernel books when I was about 14 and racing through them all. Memories…

I would love to join in with this challenge but I have so much that I have to read for group and teaching purposes I daren’t think about it. I used to teach ‘The Secret Garden’ to my final year undergrads and it is the most wonderful book, still remarkable relevant nearly a hundred years after it was written.

The Secret Garden is one of those books I’m not sure whether or not I’ve read… the film was the first one I saw at the cinema, and I think I’ve heard an audio version perhaps, but not sure if read it…Did you know that Persephone have published a Barbara Euphan Todd adults’ novel, Miss Ranskill Comes Home? Perhaps you’ve mentioned it before… anyway, well worth a read, I loved it.Simon

I went from your blog to Tara’s and see that you learnt about Miss Ranskill there!
