It’s time for another Classics Club Spin.
Before next Sunday, 16 February 2025 create a post that lists twenty books of your choice that remain “to be read” on your Classics Club list. On that day the Classics Club will post a number from 1 through 20. The challenge is to read whatever book falls under that number on your Spin List by the 11 April 2025
Here’s my list:
- The Annotated Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen (a re-read)
- In Cold Blood by Truman Capote
- The Case of the Gilded Fly by Edmund Crispin
- Bleak House by Charles Dickens
- Dombey and Son by Charles Dickens
- Nicholas Nickleby by Charles Dickens
- The Lost World by Arthur Conan Doyle
- Friends and Heroes by Olivia Manning
- The Birds and other short stories by Daphne du Maurier
- I’ll Never be Young Again by Daphne du Maurier
- North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell
- Brighton Rock by Graham Greene
- The Go Between by L P Hartley
- The Great Fire by Shirley Hazzard
- Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
- Daisy Miller by Henry James
- Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee
- Friends and Heroes by Olivia Manning
- Down and Out in Paris and London by George Orwell
- Fire from Heaven by Mary Renault
I’m happy to get any of these, but it would be great if it’s Pride and Prejudice as that is the book I’ll be (re)reading in March as part of the ReadingAusten25 project.
Which one/s would you recommend?
You have such interesting choices, Margaret! I remember Brave New World having a real impact on me when I first read it. And Go Set a Watchman gives such an interesting perspective on the original To Kill a Mockingbird. Oh, and I see In Cold Blood, too. That’s another that left a real impression on me. In any case, I hope you’ll enjoy whichever book you get.

Great list, I’ve put North and South and Brave New World on mine too! Brighton Rock and The Go-Between are two of my most favourite reads ever; hope you enjoy them too!

Thank you, Jane.

Nice list, though I haven’t read many on it. I would likely root for #9 (The Birds) or #1 (P&P). Enjoy whichever you get, Margaret!!

Thanks, Kaye. I’ll be reading P&P whichever number comes up. I’d be happy reading The Birds too. I have read the title story before as a standalone. It’s nothing like Hitchcock’s film!

We both have Dickens on our lists, but I’m not sure that’s what I want to get this time! You have many good choices, but I think I’ll wish The Birds for you. I enjoyed that collection.

I’m the same about Dickens too, Kelly – I do want to read the books, but not just yet! I’m glad you enjoyed The Birds.

The Lost World is on my list too, but at a different number. If you get P&P, I get Walter Scott, so I’ll hold you responsible… ;)

The only book by Scott I’ve read is Ivanhoe – and I enjoyed it, despite the archaic language and its length in a small font. So I still hope the spin falls on number 1. :)

I put P&P and a Zola on my spin list knowing I would be reading them regardless (one in March and the other in April). But I read another Shirley Hazzard book for the year club in October and loved it so much I wish you The Great Fire this time :-)

I’d be very happy to read The Great Fire, it’s been sitting on my shelves for too long now. I’m glad to hear you loved it.

I loved In Cold blood. It’s kind of narrative non fiction about the real life murder of a family. It’s dark but Truman Capote is a great writer.

It’s good to know you enjoyed In Cold Blood. I put it on my list as I read and enjoyed Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Go Set a Watchman has gotten mixed reviews, but I liked it. There’s a bit in there that I think too many people overlook/ignore and then they think that the characters we know from Mockingbird are totally different, and that angered a lot of people.

It’s such a great idea to read an annotated Pride and Prejudice.
Good luck!
