Classics Club Spin

It’s time for another Classics Club Spin.

Before next Sunday, 21 April 2024 create a post that lists twenty books of your choice that remain “to be read” on your Classics Club list. On that day the Classics Club will post a number from 1 through 20. The challenge is to read whatever book falls under that number on your Spin List by 3rd March, 2024.

Here’s my list:

  1. Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen
  2. In Cold Blood by Truman Capote
  3. The Case of the Gilded Fly by Edmund Crispin
  4. The Stars Look Down by A J Cronin
  5. Dombey and Son by Charles Dickens
  6. Nicholas Nickleby by Charles Dickens
  7. The Lost World by Arthur Conan Doyle
  8. The Black Tulip by Alexandre Dumas
  9. The Birds and other short stories by Daphne du Maurier
  10. I’ll Never be Young Again by Daphne du Maurier
  11. North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell
  12. Brighton Rock by Graham Greene
  13. The Great Fire by Shirley Hazzard
  14. Strangers on a Train by Patricia Highsmith
  15. Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
  16. Daisy Miller by Henry James
  17. Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee
  18. How Green Was My Valley by Richard Llewellyn
  19. Friends and Heroes by Olivia Manning
  20. Fire from Heaven by Mary Renault

Which one/s would you recommend?

  1. I really like your choices, Margaret. The Highsmith is, I think, a classic of psychological suspense, and the Huxley is a fascinating look at a sci-fi view of the future. Lots of other good ‘uns here, too. Whichever you get, I hope you enjoy it.

  2. What a great list, Sense and Sensibility and Brighton Rock are two of my favourite books of all! I’m going to have North and South on my list too when I get around to it – I hope the spin is kind and you get a great read!

  3. I’ve read about half of those and my favourites are The Black Tulip, The Birds and How Green Was My Valley. I’ll have to make a new Classics Club list soon as I don’t really have enough books left to take part in the spins!

    1. Glad to know you loved those books. Happy to read them all – that’s the problem with choosing what to read next, so it’s good to have the decision taken away from me. But then, of course, I still have the option of reading something else!

  4. You have some books I really enjoyed on your list and several that I still have on my TBR. I’m not sure I’ve read anything by Mary Renault, so I hope you get that one. It sounds very good!

  5. Lots of great choices–of course, S&S is top of my recommendation list, followed closely by North and South. I also really liked In Cold Blood, both Dickens novels (although Nicholas is MUCH better than Dombey). I read How Green Was My Valley ages ago and remember thinking it really good.

On the flip side, you couldn’t pay me to reread Go Set a Watchman. In my opinion, it should never have been published as it is first draft at best.

Hope you get a great number and a great book this spin!
