It’s time for another Classics Club Spin.
Before next Sunday, 21 January 2024 create a post that lists twenty books of your choice that remain “to be read” on your Classics Club list. On that day the Classics Club will post a number from 1 through 20. The challenge is to read whatever book falls under that number on your Spin List by 3rd March, 2024.
Here’s my list:
- Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen
- In Cold Blood by Truman Capote
- The Case of the Gilded Fly by Edmund Crispin
- The Stars Look Down by A J Cronin
- Dombey and Son by Charles Dickens
- Nicholas Nickleby by Charles Dickens
- The Lost World by Arthur Conan Doyle
- The Black Tulip by Alexandre Dumas
- The Birds and other short stories by Daphne du Maurier
- North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell
- Brighton Rock by Graham Greene
- The Great Fire by Shirley Hazzard
- Strangers on a Train by Patricia Highsmith
- Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
- Daisy Miller by Henry James
- Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee
- How Green Was My Valley by Richard Llewellyn
- Friends and Heroes by Olivia Manning
- Fire from Heaven by Mary Renault
- The Invisible Man by H G Wells
Which one/s would you recommend?
Lots and lots of good stuff there! If you’re looking for a long read then obviously I’m going to pick Dickens, Nicholas Nickleby to be precise. But if you’re looking for a short one I hope you get The Case of the Gilded Fly – I haven’t read that one yet but I’ve enjoyed a few of his other books recently. Whatever you get, I hope you enjoy it!

At the moment I’d prefer a short one.

You do have some great stuff here, Margaret. I’m pleased to see you have a few of Dickens’ novels. And of course, you can’t go far wrong with Austen. The Case of the Gilded Fly is an interesting crime novel, and I like Crispin’s wit. And In Cold Blood is a fascinating look at that crime – at least I thought so. Whichever one you get, I hope you’ll enjoy it.

Lovely list, Brighton Rock and Sense and Sensibility are two of my absolute favourites. We have a couple in common too, North and South and In Cold Blood. I hope you enjoy whichever number it is!

I’ve read and enjoyed several of these. I hope you get In Cold Blood or the du Maurier collection.

Thank you, Kelly – I fancy some short stories at the moment an In Cold Blood sounds intriguing.

I’ve fished your comment out of my Spam – and I’d love to read How Green Was My Valley soon if it’s not my Spin number. It;s been one of the books I’ve been meaning to read for years,

I believe that Paula is hosting Dewithon again this year, so even without a spin, you could read it in March :-)

The Black Tulip is my favourite of those, but I’ve enjoyed some of the others too – and am halfway through Nicholas Nickleby at the moment. I also have Fire from Heaven on my spin list, but at a different number. Good luck!

I enjoyed The Mount of Monte Cristo so I’d be happy with The Black Tulip – and it is quite short.
