Classics Club Spin

It’s time for another Classics Club Spin.

Before next Sunday, 21 January 2024 create a post that lists twenty books of your choice that remain “to be read” on your Classics Club list. On that day the Classics Club will post a number from 1 through 20. The challenge is to read whatever book falls under that number on your Spin List by 3rd March, 2024.

Here’s my list:

  1. Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen
  2. In Cold Blood by Truman Capote
  3. The Case of the Gilded Fly by Edmund Crispin
  4. The Stars Look Down by A J Cronin
  5. Dombey and Son by Charles Dickens
  6. Nicholas Nickleby by Charles Dickens
  7. The Lost World by Arthur Conan Doyle
  8. The Black Tulip by Alexandre Dumas
  9. The Birds and other short stories by Daphne du Maurier
  10. North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell
  11. Brighton Rock by Graham Greene
  12. The Great Fire by Shirley Hazzard
  13. Strangers on a Train by Patricia Highsmith
  14. Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
  15. Daisy Miller by Henry James
  16. Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee
  17. How Green Was My Valley by Richard Llewellyn
  18. Friends and Heroes by Olivia Manning
  19. Fire from Heaven by Mary Renault
  20. The Invisible Man by H G Wells

Which one/s would you recommend?

  1. Lots and lots of good stuff there! If you’re looking for a long read then obviously I’m going to pick Dickens, Nicholas Nickleby to be precise. But if you’re looking for a short one I hope you get The Case of the Gilded Fly – I haven’t read that one yet but I’ve enjoyed a few of his other books recently. Whatever you get, I hope you enjoy it!

  2. You do have some great stuff here, Margaret. I’m pleased to see you have a few of Dickens’ novels. And of course, you can’t go far wrong with Austen. The Case of the Gilded Fly is an interesting crime novel, and I like Crispin’s wit. And In Cold Blood is a fascinating look at that crime – at least I thought so. Whichever one you get, I hope you’ll enjoy it.

  3. Lovely list, Brighton Rock and Sense and Sensibility are two of my absolute favourites. We have a couple in common too, North and South and In Cold Blood. I hope you enjoy whichever number it is!

    1. I’ve fished your comment out of my Spam – and I’d love to read How Green Was My Valley soon if it’s not my Spin number. It;s been one of the books I’ve been meaning to read for years,

  4. The Black Tulip is my favourite of those, but I’ve enjoyed some of the others too – and am halfway through Nicholas Nickleby at the moment. I also have Fire from Heaven on my spin list, but at a different number. Good luck!
