  1. I can’t quite work out who the “old Man” is meant to be, but I have discovered, through a bit of judicious internet searching, that the book is Bobby Charlton’s autobiography!

  2. Is it Hemingway’s Old Man and the Sea? And if so, the contest is fishing! Not my cup of tea, either :)

  3. Sam, you are brilliant. It is indeed from “Sir Bobby Charlton:the Autobiography”. Nan, yes you are completely right – it is not American football!Gentle Reader, sorry it’s not the Old Man and the Sea.Two more hints: the sub-title of the book is “My Manchester United Years” and the Old Man was a Knight of the Realm and Scottish.

  5. Is the ‘Old Man’ Sir Alf Ramsey? I don’t know what makes me think that as I’m not even remotely a football fan.

  6. Cath, no it wasn’t Sir Alf.I’m a football fan of sorts – living with football fans all my life it sort of seeps into my brain and I do watch it now and then – like last Sunday’s match. The ‘Old Man’ was the Manchester United manager from 1945-1969 and 1970-1971 Sir Matt Busby. 7. Of course! Sir Matt Busby. I knew there was someone else, I just couldn’t think of his name.
