Every Friday Book Beginnings on Friday is hosted by Gillion at Rose City Reader where you can share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading. You can also share from a book you want to highlight just because it caught your fancy.
My book this week is Casino Royale by Ian Fleming, a a Kindle Daily Deal e-book I bought for 99p this week, the first James Bond novel.

It begins:
The scent and smoke and sweat of casino are nauseating at three in the morning. Then the soul-erosion produced by high gambling – a compost of greed and nervous tension – becomes unbearable and the senses awake and revolt from it.
Also every Friday there is The Friday 56, hosted by Freda at Freda’s Voice. *Grab a book, any book. *Turn to Page 56 or 56% on your ereader . If you have to improvise, that is okay. *Find a snippet, short and sweet, but no spoilers!

These are the rules:
- Grab a book, any book.
- Turn to page 56, or 56% on your eReader. If you have to improvise, that is okay.
- Find any sentence (or a few, just don’t spoil it) that grabs you.
- Post it.
- Add the URL to your post in the link on Freda’s most recent Friday 56 post.

Page 56:
‘My name’s Felix Leiter,’ said the American. ‘Glad to meet you.’
‘Mine’s Bond – James Bond.’
Blurb:
Le Chiffre is a businessman with expensive tastes, and SMERSH’s chief operative in France. But as his dissolute lifestyle threatens to ruin him, his only hope is to risk his paymasters’ money at the card table.
James Bond, the finest gambler in the service, has a deadly new mission: to outplay Le Chiffre and shatter his Soviet cell.
Amidst the opulence of Casino Royale, the two men face each other for a game with the highest stakes of all.
I did really enjoy the film adaptation of this book, so perhaps this would be a nice gateway to start trying out Ian Fleming’s work! I hope you enjoy it and have a lovely start to the weekend and do drop by my Friday post if you have the time! – Juli @ A Universe in Words

It’ll be interesting to see how the book compares to the film adaptation!

There’s something about those James Bond stories, Margaret. You have to completely suspend your disbelief, and that can be fun if it’s done right. I hope you’ll enjoy this one.

Thanks Margot – I’ll remember to suspend my disbelief!

I loved the 100%, unapologetically male Bond books. I read them all as a teenager in the 70s. They are like old boyfriends to me now. W.E.B. Griffith’s Brotherhood of War series is in same.

Glad to hear you loved the Bond books – and hope I will too.

Great snippets, and in the 56, I can almost hear Sean Connery saying “mine’s Bond…James Bond.” LOL
Thanks for sharing, and here’s mine: “YOU WILL REMEMBER ME”

I was pleased that sentence was on page 56 – I could heat Sean Connery too. 🙂

I have never read an Ian Fleming and only watched one or two of the movies with my husband. My bad, I know…!! Maybe I should just read one. The storyline does sound really good…
Happy weekend and I hope you are planning to watch the movie too!

Thanks – I watched the movie years ago, but it would be good to watch it again when I’ve finished the book.

My husband has read the entire series and enjoyed it. I have only ever seen the movies, which he says are very different. I would like to give the books a try at some point to see for myself. I hope you are enjoying Casino Royale! Have a great weekend, Margaret!
