Yesterday the 20 Books of Summer Challenge, hosted by Cathy at 746 Books, came to an end … and once more I didn’t manage to read all twenty of the books I’d listed. Although over the 3 months of this challenge I read 24 books, only 8 of them were ones I’d earmarked, as shown below, with links to my reviews. All 8 are books that were on my TBR shelves, so although it could have been better, I think that is a good result.
- Those Who Are Loved by Victoria Hislop 4.5*
- Anything You Do Say by Gillian McAllister 4*
- Beneath the Surface by Fiona Neill 4*
- Blood on the Tracks edited by Martin Edwards 3*
- Clouds of Witness by Dorothy L Sayers 4*
- The Seven Sisters by Lucinda Riley 5*
- Operation Pax by Michael Innes 4*
- An Advancement of Learning by Reginald Hill 4.5*
Of these my favourite is The Seven Sisters by Lucinda Riley and now I’m eager to read the whole series beginning with next one, The Storm Sister.
Of the remaining books on my list I have started 2 of them – Ruling Passion and Life After Life, and I intend/hope to read the others before the end of the year:
- The Man in the Queue by Josephine Tey
- Far from the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy
- The Silver Box by Mina Bates
- The Moon Sister by Lucinda Riley
- No Tomorrow by Luke Jennings
- An April Shroud by Reginald Hill
- Ruling Passion by Reginald Hill
- The Island by Victoria Hislop
- Life After Life by Kate Atkinson
- Becoming Mrs Lewis by Patti Callahan
- The Rose Labyrinth by Tatania Hardie
- Daughter of Earth and Water: a biography of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley by Noel Gerson
I think eight books off the tbr mountain is good whichever way you look at it. Well done. Just looked to the right and saw that you’re reading My Scotland by Val McDermid… what a ‘gorgeous’ cover it has!

Thanks, Cath. Val McDermid’s My Scotland is very good – about the locations of her books as well as about herself.

Reading eight of the books on your list is a good result, Margaret. And I’m especially pleased that you had a number of good experiences, without a lot of disappointment. It’s always nice, isn’t it, when a challenge turns out to introduce you to some good ‘uns.

Thanks, Margot. I was so pleased they are all good books.

I think you did quite well, Margaret. I really have a hard time with selecting books in advance and then reading those books in a set timeframe. Unless I’m reading a series in order – but that would be different. Ha!

Thanks Kay, it’s good to know I’m not the only one who finds it difficult to stick to reading the books on a list – even when I do want to read them. And yes, reading a series is makes it much easier to carry on reading the next book – the trouble is that I have several series in progress and I can’t get round to reading them quickly enough. 🙂

Well done, Margaret! I read 15 rather than 20 but they weren’t all on the original list which I’m fine with. Of course, I scarcely managed any reviews – ah well! It was fun all the same 🙂

Thanks, Sandra. Ah, writing reviews is for me much more difficult than reading the books, especially as I’m always keen to get on to my next one and so I leave it too long – and then it’s even more difficult. 🙂

I know that feeling! But you do brilliantly with your reviews. I shall keep trying 🙂

Thank you, Sandra! So do you 🙂 and yours are so much more detailed than mine.

I think that’s a good result, especially as they were all books you enjoyed. Those Who Are Loved was on my list, but I didn’t have time for it – I will read it eventually and am glad it got 4.5 stars from you!

Thanks, Helen – I hope you also enjoy Those Who Are Loved!

It’s the quality that counts and since you had eight goodies then I reckon you won! And you still have the pleasure of the other ones to look forward to – especially those Hills!

Thanks, FF. The Hills are indeed ‘beckoning’ …

I did exactly the same as you, Margaret. I did read 10 books over summer, but only 6 of them were on my original 10 Books of Summer list… Oh well, as you said that you read books off your TBR and enjoyed them is what really matters.
