Here are some of my current library books

Lib bks July 2019

  • Dolly by Susan Hill, sub-titled ‘A Ghost Story’, a novella set in the Fens where two young cousins, Leonora and Edward spend a summer at Iyot Lock, a large decaying house, with their ageing aunt.  I’ll be writing more about this book soon.
  • Journey to Munich by Jacqueline Winspear, a Maisie Dobbs novel. This is no. 12 in the series (I’m not reading them in order). This one is set in 1938 when Molly travels into the heart of Nazi Germany.
  • The Trip to Jerusalem: an Elizabethan Mystery by Edward Marston, the 3rd book in the Nicholas Bracewell series about a troupe of players travelling England – not  to Jerusalem but to an ancient inn called The Trip to Jerusalem – whilst the Black Plague rages.
  • The Last Dance and other stories by Victoria Hislop. Ten stories set in Greece, described on the book cover as ‘bittersweet tales of love and loyalty, of separation and reconciliation’. I’ve recently enjoyed reading her latest book, Those Who Are Loved, also set in Greece, so my eye was drawn to this book.

The library van used to visit here once a fortnight, but now it only comes once a month. I hope it continues coming, but I fear that its days are numbered, so I make sure I use it whilst I still can.

  1. Looks like a good haul, Margaret! Fingers and toes all tightly crossed for your library van. Do you have library access elsewhere if it does stop? Living in the centre of Edinburgh, I am well aware how lucky I am to be able to use our magnificent and comprehensive library service and never take it for granted.

    1. I don’t live anywhere near as comprehensive a library service as you do, Liz but there is a branch library not far away, part of the county library service. So if it does stop I’ll still be able to borrow books – thank goodness.

  2. I’ve not got into Hislop. Her first novel was enjoyable but the next few I tried just didn’t do anything for me. Hope that your fears over the library van are not realised. Can yiu encourage more people near you to use it so the council will have a harder job of axing the service?

    1. I’ve told others that if we don’t use it we will lose it but there are still only just a handful of regular borrowers. It’s a shame as the van goes round lots of little villages and hamlets round here.

      1. Such a shame because there must be some housebound people for whom this is a social life line. I know it was when my mother in law was alive

        1. There is a Home Library Service here, separate from the Mobile Library Service – volunteers deliver items free to people who are unable to visit the library every 4 weeks. So, that is good.

  4. Oh, I hope your library van keeps visiting, Margaret! You’ve got some good-looking reads this time. I like Winspear’s Maisie Dobbs novels, so it’s good to see one of them in there. I hope you’ll enjoy all of your books.

  5. I have thought about revisiting the Maisie Dobbs series, I read the first three books. But I was thinking of getting into it at a later point — closer to World War II. Maybe at the 9th or 10th book. It is working well for you to read out of order?

  6. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that you keep your library van. There don’t seem to be many left. Not even sure we have one here in Tiverton, never seen it. There was one in Minehead when we lived there as my daughter, a library assistant back then, used to go out on it occasionally.

    So looking forwrad to getting to the later Maisie books which deal with the lead-up to WW2.

    1. Thanks Cath! I was so pleased to find out, after we moved here that the library van stopped here. It’s very good – not a lot of stock but they will get books for you, not just if you reserve them, but if you want a particular subject they’ll bring a selection to choose from.

  7. Oh No! the Library Lady hates to hear about book lovers who don’t have enough books. Can you do a mail-a-book program or download E books? There are other options out there if the library van isn’t cutting it. Anyway, good list, Dolly sounds interesting. I’ll track that down.

    1. No need to worry LibraryLady! I have loads of books and there is a branch library not far away from where I live – I use that regularly as well as the library van! My Kindle too is loaded with e-books and there is also the Kindle Lending Library – I shall never be bookless. But thanks for your concern! 🙂
