which for me is Greenmantle by John Buchan. The rules of the Spin are that this is the book for me to read by January 31, 2019.

Greenmantle is the second of five novels by John Buchan featuring the character of Richard Hannay, first published in 1916. I’ve read the first, The Thirty-Nine Steps.

Here’s the blurb from Amazon:

Richard Hannay is tasked to investigate rumours of an uprising in the Muslim world and takes off on a hair-raising journey through German-occupied Europe to meet up with his old friend Sandy Arbuthnot in Constantinople, where they must thwart the Germans’ plans to use religion to help them win the war. Set during World War I, Greenmantle is a contraversial meditation on the power of political Islam (it was pulled from Radio 4’s schedule at the time of the 7 July bombings).

I’m really pleased this book came up in the Spin for me as it will fit in with my reading about World War I.

  5. I’ve read the first few Hannay books, I seem to remember liking the third one the best but if I’m honest I think I read them all close together so I can’t really remember any if them clearly. They are page turner’s at least so hopefully this will be an easy read for you!

    1. I thought The Thirty-Nine Steps was a page-turner too – a fast moving action-story, beginning with an international conspiracy, involving anarchists, financiers and spies. I can imagine if you read them one after the other they could easily merge into each other. 🙂

  6. I remember Robert Powell playing Richard Hannay back in the 1990s (?) and enjoying the series very much. I read several of the books from the library at that time but not this as far as I remember. It sounds very good and I like John Buchan’s books so will see if I can see it somewhere. I hope you enjoy it

    1. I didn’t see the Robert Powell version in the 1990s, but I would think he was very good in the role of Hannay. I watched the TV adaptation in 2008 with Rupert Penry-Jones as Hannay before I read the book, so inevitably I visualised him as Hannay.

      1. RP really was excellent in the role. For some reason the RP-J version passed me by, wonder how I managed to miss that. Anyway, Greenmantle is free on Amazon for Kindles so I nabbed it.
