This week’s topic is Ten of the Longest Books I’ve Read.
In the past I used to prefer reading long books, so most of the ones listed below are ones I read years ago. These days I tend to shy away from really long books, unless they’re e-books, as they’re usually heavy to hold or in such a small font that I find them difficult to read, or both.
In page number order(which vary according to different editions) they are:
Les Misérables by Victor Hugo, 1,231 pages.
The October Horse by Colleen McCullough, 1,124 pages
The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett, 1,088 pages
The Grass Crown by Colleen McCullough, 1,043 pages
The Mists of Avalon by Marion Bradley, 1,009 pages
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke, 1,006 pages
The Way We Live Now by Anthony Trollope, 976 pages.
War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy, 975 pages.
The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, 960 pages.
Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell, 959 pages.
My favourites of these books are Gone with the Wind and War and Peace – both of these surprised me at how much I enjoyed them.

I had no idea The Way We Live Now was that long. Its on my list to read so now I know I shall need some stamina. I think War and Peace is my longest so far…

I read The Way We Live Now before I began writing this blog, and I only noted down that I thought it was ‘Good – extremely long’! but I remembered watching the TV adaptation with David Suchet as Melmotte, that helped, I think.

Funny how War and Peace has the reputation of being the longest book ever but there are plenty just as long. I’ve also read Gone with the Wind and Jonathan Strange, but had forgotten how long Jonathan Strange is. I must look up those Colleen McCullough books.

Cath, my copy of War and Peace must be in the smallest font ever as I’ve seen the book listed on Goodreads with much longer page numbers! I thought Jonathan Strange was too long – all those footnotes!! I read all of Colleen McCullough’s Masters of Rome books years ago and they are all long, but I absolutely loved them!

My edition of “War and Peace” was also quite small – only 980 pages … 980 very thin pages with very small writing 🙂

I read War and Peace one winter at the bus stop while I was waiting for the bus to work to arrive. As I can’t read on buses themselves it was a very protracted read and kept me going all through both autumn and spring terms. I also know someone who read it on his I-phone. That really takes dedication.

I can’t read on buses or in the car either, which is most annoying. I used to read at bus stops too. I can’t imagine reading on an i-phone!
