I was delighted to get these books for Christmas:

The Midnight Line by Lee Child. I’ve never read any books by Lee Child, so I’m looking forward to reading it. Philip Pullman is quoted on the back cover – ‘I always seize the latest Lee Child with pleasure.‘ It’s no. 22 in his Jack Reacher thriller series. I wonder if this will set me off reading another series?

Codeword Puzzle Book: 300 Brain Teasing Codeword Puzzles. I’m a Codeword addict -they’re also known as Alphapuzzles – and I like to do at least two a day, so this book is ideal for me.

Night of the Lightbringer by Peter Tremayne – a signed copy of his latest Sister Fidelma mysteries! Another series to tempt me as this is the 28th medieval murder mystery,  featuring Sister Fidelma, a Celtic nun and also an advocate of the ancient Irish law system. It’s set in Ireland in AD 671 on the eve of the pagan feast of Samhain.

Mythos: The Greek Myths Retold by Stephen Fry I’ve already written a First Chapter, First Paragraph post about this book. These are stories about gods, monsters and heroes – stories about Zeus, Apollo, Poseidon and Adonis and Aphrodite, for example.

  3. Hope you enjoy all of these, Margaret! My husband is the Lee Child reader here. He’s caught up on the series and really likes it. The only thing he didn’t like was when Tom Cruise was selected to play Reacher in the movies. No offense to Mr. Cruise, but Reacher is supposed to be something like 6’4″, not 5’7″ or whatever. I’ve heard of the Sister Fidelma series, but not ever read any reviews of the books I don’t think. Look forward to hearing what you think.

  4. You got some nice gifts, Margaret! I’ll be interested in what you think of both the Child series and the Tremayne series. They’re quite different to each other, but both are long-running and well regarded.

  5. Hmm…Lee Child. I read the first Jack Reacher and was thrilled to have a new series with a really likeable protagonist & decent action. So I went on to the second in the series. The first thing that bothered me was that the syory was no longer from Jack’s first-person perspective but was now third person. And then the body count started mounting: when it reached seven, I stopped keeping track and decided that would be the last Jack Reacher novel for me.

    Maybe that second book was a blip in the matter of bloodshed, though. I mentioned my feelings to my sister and she seemed surprised and said that she hadn’t noticed that body counts were particularly high (and she’s read pretty much the entire series).

    For what it’s worth. 🙂
