Farewell Lucy

Last night our little cat, Lucy died. She was nearly 17 and was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism two years ago. Since then she did improve and coped with us moving house at the end of 2009. For a while it seemed she had a new lease of life, enjoying the garden and its wildlife. Last week she stopped eating and just declined. The vet said she had a growth in her stomach and an enlarged heart.

She was a wonderful companion, who stayed by our side like a dog, even wanting to come on walks with us. I’ve written many blog posts about her and have many photos that I’m going to bring together as a set on Flickr. Here are just a few of our favourites.

She often sat with me when I was blogging, sometimes on the windowsill and more often right in front of the keyboard whilst I was trying to type.

This is a painting of her by our friend John.

She is sadly missed!

  1. Oh, Margaret! I’m so sorry! It’s so hard to see our furry friends age. Thankfully you had many wonderful years with Lucy and she had a wonderful life. Our cat Jack is 18 1/2 with diabetes and we treasure every day we still have left with him.

  2. I am so sorry Margaret. We sure miss our little friends when they pass. We lost Ollie cat a year ago and we still miss him. Lucy looks well loved and I hope you can take comfort in all the sweet memories you have of your years with her.

  3. Margaret, I’m so sorry. Lucy was a beautiful cat and I know you will miss her. She looks very much like my daughter’s cat, Moe. He is also an orange tabby and he is growing older too. Such a sweet tempered cat though.

  4. I’m so sorry Margaret. Lucy was lovely. I’m glad she had a long life and a couple of good years even after some health trouble. This reminds me of my own old guy, Snowball, who died about 6 years ago.

  6. She looks to have been a very beautiful cat…and well-loved. I am sure that wherever she is now, she’s eternally grateful to have been chosen by such an obviously doting family.

  8. So sorry, Margaret. I’d love a cat but I resist because I can’t face the inevitable sadness you’re suffering now. However, I have to ask myself – which one of us is the poorer?

  11. Ah, Lucy looks so sweet and adorable! I love orange cats…I had an orange tabby named Sebastian, whom we lost a few years ago….

I’m always happy that I have photos to help me remember the wonderful cats I’ve loved and lost.

Your photo gallery honoring Lucy sounds wonderful.

  12. What a sweet girl! I’m so sorry about this sad news–pets become such a part of the family. It sounds like she had a happy life, however, though it doesn’t make things any easier. I’ll miss the photos you had been sharing of her!

  13. It’s amazing how pets are just as much a part of the family as anyone else. It looks as thought Lucy had an amazing life … may your memories of her be a comfort to you : )
