Tami inspired this week’s question:

What book do you think should be made into a movie? And do you have any suggestions for the producers?

Or, What book do you think should NEVER be made into a movie?

 I think the book I finished reading at the weekend would make a great movie. The book is The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson. I wrote about it here. It begins with a dramatic car crash, a car plunging over a ravine bursting into flames. Then there is intrigue, mystery and plenty of action. The story moves backwards and forwards in time from medieval Germany to the present day, with tales from Japan, Italy, Iceland and England. A rich and colourful story.

Another book that would be good as a movie is Kate Atkinson’s When Will There be Good News? (I wrote about it here.) Featuring Jackson Brodie, an ex-cop turned private detective this is full of suspense, a crime to be solved with many surprises and twists and turns along the way.

  4. Saw ‘The Gargoyle’ in the library, but my hands were full will get it next time. It sounded good, a good movie there!

  5. Instead of answering your question, I’m going to make an observation about A Book and A Movie.

    I always loved the book 84 Charing Cross Road, utterly charming book that consists entirely of letters written between the a booklover in NYC and various people connected with a London bookshop. (Yes, I know, everyone who reads this blog already knows that.) The letters are more about ideas and books than events.

    So, in the 1980s, when I heard it was going to be made into a movie, I said, That will never work. How can it?

    I was happily wrong. The movie is brilliant, and captures the essence of the correspondents, the letters and the times (1950s). I could watch it again and again. And I do.

    The very funny, very engaging Miss Buncle’s Book (1934), by D. E. Stevenson, recently reissued by Persephone Books. It would make a wonderful movie.

    Advice for the producers: cast it faithfully and don’t mess with the story or the characters.

  7. You are the second person I’ve come across today that’s said Gargoyle would be a great movie. I just purchased the book this week and I’m really looking forward to reading it. Sounds like an amazing book.

  11. Yes, I thought “The Gargoyle” would make a terrific movie, too. I guess there might be a bit of a problem, since the main character would probably have to be completely disguised behind heavy makeup and prosthetics part of the time. But it’s a great romance, with lots of “movie potential.”
